Master - Year 2 (Exchange)

My Blobism project began with a deep investigation into what the movement originally meant, not just visually, but culturally and emotionally. I traced its evolution from radical architectural experimentation to designer‑driven emotional expression, and finally to the softened, commercialised aesthetic that dominated the 2000s. This research helped me understand how Blobism shifted from a bold, optimistic design philosophy to something far more restrained and mass-market-friendly.

By analysing these transitions, I began to see the gap between Blobism’s early intentions and the way it was later simplified. The more I studied its history, the clearer it became that much of its expressive power had been minimised: melted forms became gentle curves, asymmetry became subtle rounding, and “form follows emotion” was replaced by “form follows function.” This realisation naturally led me to the central question driving the project.

What if that minimisation had never happened? What if Blobism had continued to evolve with all its boldness intact? To explore this alternative trajectory, I used form studies, CAD experiments, and speculative redesigns of early-2000s devices to imagine a world where everyday technology remained expressive, playful, and emotionally driven. The project became both a critique of what was lost and a proposal for what design could still become.
