For my graduation project, I spent four months in Billund working with the LEGO DUPLO element design team, an experience that reshaped how I think about play, creativity, and human-centred design. Even though I can’t share project details due to an NDA, the values I discovered there continue to guide my work today.
At LEGO, I learned that play is a form of communication. It’s how children explore, imagine, and connect with the world. Seeing this up close made me more sensitive to the emotional impact of form, colour, and interaction, and how even the simplest shapes can spark entire stories.
Working alongside designers, engineers, and play specialists taught me the power of collaborative creativity. Ideas grew through conversation, iteration, and staying open and playful throughout the process. It strengthened my belief that good design is both expressive and intentional.
Designing for very young children also taught me to think with empathy and clarity. Every curve, gesture, and proportion matters. I became more attuned to how design can support development, encourage exploration, and create joyful moments between children and caregivers.
This experience helped define the kind of designer I want to be: someone who creates work that feels warm, expressive, and emotionally engaging, design that invites curiosity and celebrates individuality. I wrapped up the project with a final presentation and earned an 8 for my thesis, but the real impact was the shift in how I see design itself.
